Goldman Sachs Buying Influence?

Goldman Sach

It has now become public knowledge that Goldman Sachs in the immediate weeks following the public allegations by the SEC that it had violated SEC rules in one of the several thousand deals that it has done over the last couple of years, has publicly given over $300,000 dollars to members of Congress. We don’t have a list yet, of who was given the money. I can tell you this. It did not go to some hillbilly Congressman representing the backwaters of Arkansas where they kill rattle snakes for dinner. The money went to the boys in power who can move the temperature up and down on Goldman.

As an example in the House there are only 50 members who count. They run the Appropriations Committee. Any money passing through the House must go through Appropriations. The other Congressmen might as well stay home. If I wanted to influence the SEC, I would put money into key Appropriations Committee members. If you control the budget of the SEC, you control the SEC. No different than a job. I pay your salary, I tell you what to do.

Goldman Sachs is quite a company, isn’t it? What a country we live in. You get accused of murder, so what do you do? You give hundreds of thousands of dollars to the guy prosecuting your case and throw in a couple of dollars for the judge and jury as well. Do you think my analogy holds up, or does it fall off the edge of the table?

It is inconceivable to me that we the people allow this sort of thing. If you want to know why the system is in trouble, you need to look no further. Was it Jefferson who said, “The people deserve the government they get.”
